The Parliament on Wednesday in Lusaka called on Zambia?s energy regulator, the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), to ensure a stable supply of petroleum products on the market to avoid the shortages the country has experienced in the recent past.
Deputy Speaker Mkhondo Lungu said during a meeting held with the ERB on Wednesday that the regulator has a crucial role to play in ensuring a regular supply of diesel and petrol on the market.
Lungu said the ERB needs to immediately ensue that the country builds up strategic oil reserves through Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), to avoid the erratic supply of petrol and diesel on the market.
Zambia has been plagued with a short supply of petrol and diesel in most parts of the country which the government has been unable to explain, insisting that the supply chain for both was working well and there should be no shortages.
The shortages have been blamed on the failure by OMCs to ensure that they supplied their filling stations with adequate stocks of diesel and petrol.
The ERB is a statutory body that was created by an Act of Parliament to ensure fair practices and prices of petroleum products and other energy related industries on the market.
