Huawei set to kick of TV advertising for the Ascend P!

Android Central

It looks like Huawei are going from strength to strength these days and it would appear that they are all set to start promoting the Ascend P1 Android smartphone on television.

The following video cropped up today on Huawei's YouTube channel and like many other smartphone commercials around at the moment it doesn't focus so much on the actual device but trys to portrait a message. The message here is quite clear:

The Ascend P1 is beauty meets brains -- proof that technology and good looks can go hand-in-hand.

I think Huawei are making a lot of sense here as the device certainly matches up to its image. With a dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 Cortext-A9 processor, measuring 7.69mm thin and 64.8 mm long, combined with a 4.3-inch super AMOLED 960 x 540 touch screen with Corning® Gorilla® Glass, an 8-megapixel BSI rear-facing camera and Dolby Mobile 3.0 + 5.1 surround sound technology the Ascend P1 is not a phone to be sniffed at.

You can check out the new TV commercial below and if you didn't see our full review of the device you can do so here.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court decided Friday not to consider reinstating the government's $550,000 fine on CBS for Janet Jackson's infamous breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl.

The high court refused to hear an appeal from the Federal Communications Commission over the penalty.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals twice had thrown out the fine. The second time came after the Supreme Court upheld the FCC's policy threatening fines against even one-time uses of curse words on live television.

The appeals court said FCC's policy of excusing fleeting instances of indecent words and images appeared to change without notice in March 2004, a month after Jackson's halftime act. The judges said that made the agency's action against CBS "arbitrary and capricious."

But now, the FCC clearly has abandoned its exception for fleeting expletives, Chief Justice John Roberts said.

"It is now clear that the brevity of an indecent broadcast ? be it word or image ? cannot immunize it from FCC censure," he said. "Any future 'wardrobe malfunctions' will not be protected on the ground relied on by the court below."

In addition, Roberts said that calling it a "wardrobe malfunction" when Justin Timberlake ripped away part of Jackson's bustier "strained the credulity of the public."

CBS said it was grateful for the court's decision.

"At every major turn of this process, the lower courts have sided with us," the network said in a statement. "And now that the Supreme Court has brought this matter to a close, we look forward to the FCC heeding the call for the very balanced enforcement which was the hallmark of the commission for many, many years."

Scott tours flood-ravaged Pasco; Florida to seek federal disaster aid

By LAURA KINSLER | The Tampa Tribune

Gov. Rick Scott praised Pasco County officials and first responders Friday after touring the areas hardest hit by Tropical Storm Debby and said he would seek federal disaster relief for the recovery.

"There was great coordination locally with state agencies, and FEMA was here from day one," Scott said.

If there was one incident that drove home the scope of the disaster, it was Fire Chief Anthony Lopinto's description of firefighters standing in knee-deep water and trying to fight a house fire and avoid alligators.

"I don't know about you, but I don't like being in the water with alligators," Scott said.

Local, state and federal officials began compiling official damage estimates on Friday. Those losses will be considered, along with the overall county population, to determine if the county qualifies for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"It can be problematic, occasionally, if you have an event that's highly localized," Florida Emergency Management Director Bryan Koon said. "It's not going to be a problem in this case. This was a statewide event."

Pasco Emergency Management Director Annette Doying said that 28 government-owned facilities sustained an estimated $4 million in damages from the storm. At least 53 single family homes were damaged, not including mobile homes.

"I suspect we will have lost entire communities," she said. The entourage toured the Seven Springs Travel Park, which was flooded Monday and Tuesday after the Anclote River overflowed its banks. Scott also popped in on some diners at the Susie's Too caf? and drove through the Elfers Parkway neighborhood, which was still too wet to tour by foot.

"This happened Sunday, and to have this much standing water five days later merely hints at what it was like early in the week," Koon said. "We're going to work aggressively to help the residents of Pasco County recover from this event."

Bank rate rigging scandal widens; Diamond fights on

LONDON (Reuters) - A scandal over the rigging of key interest rates could plunge the global banking industry into a legal morass for years, analysts said, as the head of Barclays fought to hold onto his job.

With the Times newspaper naming RBS as the next bank facing a fine for its alleged involvement in manipulating the key lending rate between banks, the head of the Bank of England said there needed to be "real change" in the industry's culture.

Referring to what he called the "deceitful manipulation" of rates, Mervyn King told a news conference on Friday the London Interbank Offer Rate (LIBOR) should be reformed to reflect actual market transactions.

U.S. and British authorities fined Barclays $453 million on Wednesday for manipulating LIBOR, which underpins some $360 trillion of loans and financial contracts around the world - and analysts forecast more banks would soon be named for collusion.

"Reading the statements by the authorities we expect to get settlements by others in the course of time which could be more punitive," analysts at Credit Suisse said.

Others predicted Barclays and other banks could face billions in costs from litigation, especially in the United States, in much the same way that oil major BP ran into drawn-out legal rows over its oil spill.

"Given the long-tailed nature of investigations we expect this to be a long-term overhang," said Morgan Stanley analyst Chris Manners.

Barclays was the first bank to settle in an investigation which is looking at other large financial institutions in Europe, Japan and North America, including Citigroup , HSBC and UBS . No criminal charges have been filed.

The Times said RBS faced a likely fine of 150 million pounds ($233 million) for participating in market manipulation offences similar to those engaged in by Barclays. The bank said no fine or settlement had been decided upon.

"BOB THE ROB"

The heaviest pressure remained on Barclays chief Bob Diamond, who was running the investment banking arm Barclays Capital when the rigging occurred in 2005-2009, despite his vow not to quit.

Britain's popular tabloid newspaper The Sun tore into the banker, calling him "Bob the Rob" and saying: "Never in the past four miserable years have bankers been more hated than now."

Prime Minister David Cameron said Diamond would appear before parliament's Treasury Select Committee, adding, "He and his management team have serious questions to answer."

"People are rightly angry about the behavior of the banks and so am I," Cameron told a news conference in Brussels.

Britain has also called in the fraud squad to investigate possible crimes.

"Politicians have already been baying for blood and calling for the head of Bob Diamond," said Stephen Peak, manager of the Henderson UK Alpha and European Absolute Return funds and a shareholder in the bank.

"We feel that the Barclays board will instinctively wish to resist this, as Diamond is clearly the architect and leading light of Barclays, but feel that the pressure may be too great."

Diamond told Morgan Stanley analysts on Thursday he did not intend to stand down and sources close to the bank said Barclays' shareholders were satisfied with the bank's decision to come clean and settle.

One fund manager at a top 100 Barclays shareholder said he did not think senior management was to blame for the scandal.

"Realistically, how is the guy sitting several layers above going to have any knowledge of that, unless they were explicitly encouraging it -- which they don't appear to have done in this instance."

However, he added, neither Barclays or RBS had acted quickly enough to tell shareholders what was happening.

"No-one has come to us to try and explain anything. Barclays have settled early, so they can no longer claim uncertainty of outcomes in the same way but investors are still subject to reasonable uncertainty as to how much this might cost them in the end."

The father of one Barclays customer described the bank's behavior as "toxic and disgraceful" and said he would close down his child's account.

"To learn of this scandal where they are fixing Libor to benefit themselves... I just cannot believe that behavior," said Lynne Brooke, a Hampshire-based solicitor.

SPREADING SCANDAL

Authorities investigating the Libor scandal are looking at banks in Europe, North America and Japan.

In response to the Times report RBS said it continued to co-operate with regulators on the ongoing investigation, adding any resolution of its case was months away.

"The process is not as far advanced as the (Times) article suggests and there can be no certainty as to the timing or amount of any fine or settlement at this point," the bank, which is part-nationalized, said in a statement.

Like Diamond, RBS Chief Executive Stephen Hester will waive his bonus this year, a source close to the lender said, but the gesture has been presented as an apology for the recent computer systems failure which caused disruption to millions of customers, and unrelated to the LIBOR probe.

The Barclays rate-fixing affair, which disclosed e-mails in which bankers appeared to promise bottles of champagne to each other for help in setting the rates, has fuelled anger from taxpayers struggling with austerity measures who are now closely watching the banks they bailed out during the financial crisis.

Adding to their ire, the Financial Services Authority said on Friday it had found "serious failings" in the way specialist insurance had been sold by Barclays, RBS, HSBC and Lloyds , concluding they mis-sold products.

Compensation could run into the hundreds of millions of pounds, lawyers have said, although Lloyds and Barclays said the cost for it would not be material.

The FSA said from 2001 to date, banks sold around 28,000 interest rate protection products to customers.

"Such products took advantage of small businesses, many of which could not reasonably have been expected to understand what they were signing up to, at a time when loans were difficult to come by. This is completely unacceptable," said Andrew Tyrie, head of parliament's Treasury Select Committee.

A string of mis-selling cases has damaged the financial services industry for over two decades. Banks are already committed to paying upwards of 9 billion pounds ($14 billion) to customers in compensation for mis-selling loan insurance.

Barclays shares closed down 1.7 percent, the weakest major European bank. The EU bank index <.sx> rallied 4 percent after Euro zone leaders agreed emergency action to cut Spain's and Italy's borrowing costs.

Miami-Dade mayor names ex-Genting lobbyist as campaign manager

Less than two months before the Miami-Dade mayoral election, Carlos Gimenez has finally named a reelection campaign manager.

Jesse Manzano-Plaza, 35, assumed the role two weeks ago after stepping down as a lobbyist for Genting, the Malaysian company that plans to build a huge casino complex in Miami.

Inside Gimenez?s campaign, some key advisers have privately expressed their discomfort with the choice, given the controversy caused by the Genting project. Last week, Manzano-Plaza and his backers said he has plenty of political experience.

Manzano-Plaza worked for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and ex-Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. He also served for more than a year in Iraq as part of the U.S. Army Reserves.

Last year, after the recall of former Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Manzano-Plaza ran Marcelo Llorente?s mayoral campaign.

Scientists help create an extra second of summer: Leap second to be added on July 1, 2012

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Scientists at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) will be adding a leap second at 00:59 BST on 1st July to its atomic clocks, to ensure UK time remains synchronized with international time.

The insertion of the leap second is required as Earth does not rotate at a constant speed, whereas atomic clocks, several of which are located at NPL's site in Teddington, are much better at keeping time. Due to the unpredictable nature of Earth's movement, leap seconds are occasionally required to bring atomic time back into alignment with astronomical time. This procedure ensures that on average the Sun remains overhead at noon.

Peter Whibberley, Senior Research Scientist in NPL's Time and Frequency Group, said: "The purpose of leap seconds is to make sure our time scale based on atomic clocks remains in step with the time based on the Earth's rotation. The Earth is a poor timekeeper compared to our clocks, and its rotation changes unpredictably due to changes in its atmosphere and molten core. The leap second correction to our atomic clocks means we get an extra second of summer time."

Historically, time was measured using the passage of the Sun across the sky -- Earth rotation time is still used by astronomers to track stars and spacecraft. Since the start of the 1960s, an atomic time scale, known as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), has been the world's official time. The stability and global availability of UTC are essential for the smooth operations of satellite navigation and international telecommunications.

Over the last decade there has been considerable debate about the detrimental effects of inserting a leap second on computers and other equipment needing precise time. One minor effect is that some systems fail to implement a leap second at the correct instant and display an inaccurate time, but there is no agreement on the seriousness of this and other problems attributed to leap seconds.

The decision to introduce this year's leap second was taken by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), and timekeeping experts at NPL and other national timing centres will make the necessary changes to the atomic time scales on 00:00 30th June (UTC).

The future of the leap second is one of keen debate among the official international time measurement community. Some countries, including the US, have called for an end to leap seconds, but other countries disagree, and experts at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have delayed a decision on the future of the leap second until 2015.

Prostate Cancer and Genetics | mCancer Talk: Coping and living ...

One in six men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Age and race are two of the most recognized risk factors, but some risk factors can be inherited. Large scale population studies of men who have brothers or fathers with prostate cancer have shown an increase in risk that is two to three times the general population.

Some clues to inherited risk within a family include:

  • Cancer diagnosed at earlier ages than typically expected (under 40)
  • Families with multiple individuals with prostate cancer
  • Other cancers in family members including:
    • Breast cancer
    • Ovarian or uterine cancer
    • Pancreatic cancer
    • Colorectal cancer

People concerned about their families? history of prostate and other cancer may benefit from meeting with a genetic counselor in the Cancer Genetics Clinic to talk about cancer risk, possible genetic testing, screening options or research opportunities. Families who find that they are at a higher risk for prostate cancer and other cancers can benefit from increased screening and prevention options.

Approximately 5-10% of prostate cancers are thought to be related to high risk susceptibility genes, which can be passed from parent to child. Some genes are currently well known, while it is likely some still remain to be discovered. Some of these genes may also be linked to an increase in risk for additional cancers.

Research is ongoing at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and elsewhere to learn and discover new genes associated with a strong family history of prostate cancer.

Bone-eating worms drill with acid

Deep sea worms use acid to eat the bones of seabed skeletons, according to US scientists.

The so-called "zombie worms" of the Osedax family are known to bore into bones and remove nutrients.

Fresh analysis of the root-like tissues the worms use to attach to bones has identified acid-secreting enzymes.

Until now scientists did not understand how the tiny creatures fed on bone, as they lack the body parts needed to "drill" physically.

Dr Sigrid Katz from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego will present the team's research at the Society for Experimental Biology's annual conference.

Worms' world:

  • Osedax are types of segmented worms (like earthworms and ragworms) in the Polychaeta group.
  • Polychaete worms are mainly marine-living and are more commonly known as bristle worms.
  • They can range in size from 1mm up to an astonishing 3m.
  • Some of the most recognisable of these worms are the Christmas tree worms, named for their conical, spiky resemblance.

Found at the bottom of the sea living on the fallen skeletons of whales and fish, the unusual group of worms have caused fascination since their "accidental" discovery in 2002 by a remote vehicle looking for deep-sea clams.

Scientists were perplexed when they only discovered females but further investigation revealed that the males remained in their microscopic larval stage, living inside the female worms.

The unusual group's name Osedax is Latin for "bone devourer", and the worms have no mouth, gut or anus yet are still able to remove nutrients from bones.

Previous studies have revealed that symbiotic bacteria inside the worms digest the fats and oils extracted, but the question of how the worms physically bore into the bones had been a mystery.

Close analysis of the worms failed to find any abrasive structures the worms could use to mechanically "drill" into bone.

This prompted Dr Katz and colleagues to investigate whether the worms had a chemical strategy for penetrating the bones.

By analysing the worms' tissues, the team found that acid-secreting enzymes were abundant in the root-like parts that attach to bones.

"The acid is secreted through the skin of the roots region," said Dr Katz.

"The skin cells in this region are very long cells and the upper end has lots of [microscopic protrusions, which] enlarge the surface multiple times, so lots of acid can be secreted," she explained.

Seventeen species of the worms have been recorded worldwide, including in the North Atlantic ocean off the coast of Sweden, and the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of Japan and California.

Last year BBC Nature reported that traces of the worm have also been discovered in a fossil from the Mediterranean Sea.

Dr Katz said she hoped her discovery would help scientists to unravel the "mysterious lifestyle" of the worms.

"In the past 10 years we have learned a lot more about them, but there are also still a lot of questions to answer on their physiology and especially about nutrition, nutrient uptake and host-symbiont interactions," she told BBC Nature.

"The fact that we now know how they penetrate the bone is one step in understanding the functioning of this symbiosis."

La Draga Neolithic site in Banyoles yields the oldest Neolithic bow discovered in Europe

Archaeological research carried out at the Neolithic site of La Draga, near the lake of Banyoles, has yielded the discovery of an item which is unique in the western Mediterranean and Europe. The item is a bow which appeared in a context dating from the period between 5400-5200 BCE, corresponding to the earliest period of settlement. It is a unique item given that it is the first bow to be found in tact at the site. According to its date, it can be considered chronologically the most ancient bow of the Neolithic period found in Europe. The study will permit the analysis of aspects of the technology, survival strategies and social organisation of the first farming communities which settled in the Iberian Peninsula. The bow is 108 cm long and presents a plano-convex section. Worth mentioning is the fact that it is made out of yew wood (Taxus baccata) as were the majority of Neolithic bows in Europe.

In previous archaeological campaigns, fragments of two bows were found (in 2002 and 2005) also from the same time period, but since they are fragmented it is impossible to analyse the characteristics of these tools. The current discovery opens new perspectives in understanding how these farming communities lived and organised themselves. These bows could have served different purposes, such as hunting, although if one takes into account that this activity was not all that common in the La Draga area, it cannot be ruled out that the bows may have represented elements of prestige or been related to defensive or confrontational activities.

Remains have been found of bows in Northern Europe (Denmark, Russia) dating from between the 8th and 9th centuries BCE among hunter-gatherer groups, although these groups were from the Paleolithic period, and not the Neolithic. The majority of bows from the Neolithic period in Europe can be found in central and northern Europe. Some fragments of these Neolithic bows from central Europe date from the end of the 6th millennium BCE, between 5200-5000 BCE, although generally they are from later periods, often more than a thousand years younger than La Draga. For this reason archaeologists can affirm that the three bows found at La Draga are the most ancient bows in Europe from the Neolithic period.

The research carried out at the La Draga site is financed by the Department of Culture of the Government of Catalonia and the Spanish Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness. This project is being conducted under the coordination of the County Archaeological Museum of Banyoles, with the participation of the UAB Department of Prehistory, the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology of the CSIC Institute Mil i Fontanals, the National Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia and the Centre for Underwater Archaeology of Catalonia. The excavation includes the participation of archaeology students from UAB and other universities in Spain and Europe.

The Neolithic people of La Draga, Banyoles

La Draga is located in the town of Banyoles, belonging to the county of Pla de l'Estany, and is an archaeological site corresponding to the location in which one of the first farming communities settled in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. The site is located on the eastern part of the Banyoles Lake and dates back to 5400 and 5000 BCE. The site occupies 8000 sq m and stretches out 100 m along the lake's shore and 80 m towards the east. Part of the site is totally submerged in the lake, while other parts are located on solid ground. The first digs were conducted between the years 1990 and 2005, under the scientific leadership of the County Archaeological Museum of Banyoles. Since 1994, excavations were also carried out by the Centre for Underwater Research (Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia). The current project (2008-2013) includes participation by the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona and the Spanish National Research Council.

The site at La Draga is exceptional for several reasons. Firstly, due to its antiquity, which is considered to be one of the oldest of the Neolithic period existing in the Iberian Peninsula. Secondly, because it is an open-air site with a fairly continuous occupation. Lastly, and surely most remarkably, because of its exceptional conditions in which it is conserved. The archaeological levels are located in the phreatic layer surrounding Lake Banyoles, giving way to anaerobic conditions which favour the conservation of organic material. These circumstances make La Draga a unique site in all of the Iberian Peninsula, since it is the only one known to have these characteristics. In Europe, together with Dispilo in Greece and La Marmota in Italy, it is one of the few lake settlements from the 6th millennium BCE.

The phenomenon of Neolithic lake settlements is well known in the more modern chronologies of central Europe, where there is an abundance of lakes and humid environments, but extremely rare outside this geographic area. For this reason, the La Draga site is well-known amongst specialised scientific sectors and attracts researchers from around the world because of the quality of the data which can be obtained from this archaeological context. La Draga is a palaeodiverse island offering a set of extraordinary bioarchaeological elements, key for the analysis of how farming and livestock rearing communities came into existence in Europe.

Self improvement - Spirituality - Personal Growth: Do Less, Think ...

In a world crammed with information we are ironically compelled toward action and against thinking. Just to keep up with all the information we act without thinking.

Somehow we feel deceptively safe when we achieve all our deadlines, both those that are imposed on us and those we impose on ourselves. In this age of relative freedom there are a great deal more self-imposed deadlines.

Somehow we get stuck by our freedom.

Somehow we begin making decisions without thinking. And if we don't think, we have no chance of triggering thought for feeling. How do we feel about this?

Feeling is the greatest denominator for our state of existence.

Why on earth do we do the things we do? Is there a purpose, and is that purpose worthwhile? Are we compelled by purpose or are we just going through the motions?

The more time we take to adequately think, and therefore genuinely feel, the more meaning we can derive from the things we do and choose not to do. The things we do are, as a matter of introspection, checked for validity. None of us want to waste our lives, surely.

LESS IS ABUNDANTLY MORE

In a world throbbing with stuff, pretty stuff with frills and many attractive intonations, we still trust too much. We spend endless portions of time in front of computers, locked into our smart phones, collecting apps, followers, and information we may never use.

We have become hoarders against the sense of genuine need.

We are far better off rejecting ninety-eight percent of the thoughts that come into our minds about accumulation. We would be far better served to spend the time with which we rummage through the world, rummaging through our thoughts and feelings.

Only when we have done that can we know what we truly need and, therefore, want.

The skill of the new-age is critical discernment. That is, having the poise and self-discipline to say 'no' to most of the things that are simply there to distract us.

REMAINING FREE IS CONSERVING OUR LIMITED CONSCIOUSNESS

Thinking and feeling are precious. They are finite resources. When we spend our thinking and feeling on unimportant things, the important things get neglected.

If we wish to reclaim our spiritual freedom, becoming and staying more in touch with our emotional selves, and enjoying better portions of thinking capacity, we best learn to conserve our limited consciousness.

The more we learn to reject much of the world, as far as its stimuli is concerned, the more control we have over our thinking and feeling; to deploy these at the right times, in the right ways, within the important things of our lives.

Our world encourages us to do more but think and feel less. The spiritual life reverses this. We enjoy more peace, grace, and inner joy when we do less and think and feel more.

Long Term Advantages of Chiropractic Treatment

Most patients only have one goal in mind throughout their initial visit to the chiropractic doctor, relief from pain. Although, it is completely normal that you have this dominant objective when you come in suffering from neck discomfort, lower back pain or headaches, it can easily make you lose out on the some other benefits of normal chiropractic care aside from pain relief.

Pressures from work, environmental elements, and some other every day stress agents increase nervous tension to the body, which can lead to different physical problems. Lot of people, particularly those with non-active lifestyles, are prone to backache due to long hours of sitting at work or working in a confined location for a long period. When the immediate pain relief aim is obtained, it is sensible to contemplate lasting spine health. Your spine is vital for the fitness of each organ in your body. Consider it. Just how will the organs like your heart or bladder function properly if they do not receive the appropriate impulses from the brain through your spinal nerves? Just how will they preserve and regenerate themselves efficiently?

Chiropractic therapy helps individuals attain better spinal health and boost overall well being. It can easily improve the joints range of movement, relieve lower back pain, and relieve spine pressure, arthritis, pain in the joints and lower extremities. Muscle rigidity can be eliminated because the therapy regulates the flow of blood. Chiropractic treatment entails making some spine adjustments to reposition it with the brain. Consequently, the body regains its balance and the flow of energy is back in order; thus, making it easy for the body to rejuvenate by itself. Chiropractic care is advantageous to individuals with energetic lifestyles since it improves body coordination and allows them to endure long hours of physical stress.

Breathing is an exceptional benefit that lots of people do not relate to good spinal health. Lung volumes decrease as you age. Below normal lung volumes have been connected with shorter life span. Whereas, low lung volume is said to increase the risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke and other heart conditions. On the other hand, better lung volumes mean longer lifespan and lesser heart issues. Better lung volumes generally follow a healthy spinal column by means of chiropractic treatment. Sony Outplays Nintendo in Console Browsing

Two of the biggest players in the video game console market, Nintendo and Sony, are competing hard to provide their customers with the best gaming experience by adding more and more features to their flagship consoles. As a result, video game console browsing has become one of the various Web browsing options available to consumers.

Chitika Insights decided to quantify this new trend in Internet access for their latest report. Our study examined the data from thousands of impressions on the Chitika network by gaming consoles from June 14 to June 20, 2012. A user agent analysis was conducted to come up with the following results:

Sony PlayStation is clearly the leader in this market, commanding a 79% Web usage share, as compared to 21% for Nintendo Wii. This large disparity in Web usage behavior is a bit surprising, as Nintendo has more active consoles in the U.S by a wide margin. The difference is likely that the Sony PlayStation provides its users access to Web browsing features like Facebook integration, photo slide shows, and PlayStation network videos, many of which are not present on Nintendo Wii. These features may tempt PlayStation users to use their console for more Web browsing, as compared to Wii users. Additionally, Wii users must manually enter Web addresses and search queries by pointing the ?Wii-mote? at their TV and selecting letters one at a time. This can get frustrating, and it could discourage users from utilizing the Wii to browse on a more regular basis.

While console-based browsing presently only represents a small share of overall Internet traffic, there is a concerted effort by manufacturers for the console to be a central point in the living room. Along with healthy historical sales numbers, video game consoles have the potential to develop into a more dominant point of access in the years to come. In this context, current Web browsing behavior on video game consoles can be an eye opener for advertisers and website publishers. Access over these platforms adds a completely new dimension to understanding user behavior, with Internet usage over these consoles becoming a more natural choice for younger consumers.

Faster search, better photo sharing in new Android

(AP) ? Faster ways to search content on the Internet and share photos between two phones are promised in the next version of Google's Android operating system for mobile devices.

Android 4.1 is nicknamed Jelly Bean, following Google Inc.'s tradition of likening its updates to a delectable treat. Google previewed it Wednesday at a conference in San Francisco for computer programmers.

Android is now the chief rival to the mobile software running Apple's iPhone and iPad. Google said there are a million new Android devices activated daily, up from 400,000 a year ago. The company said there's particularly fast growth in emerging markets such as Brazil and India.

Jelly Bean will be available in mid-July. Some devices ? the Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Xoom and Nexus S ? will get it automatically as an over-the-air update. Google's new tablet computer, the Nexus 7, will also come with Jelly Bean.

One of the new features in Android will be Google Now, which is supposed to get you the right information at the right time automatically, if you activate the feature. If you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on the status of your flights if you're traveling.

Google said the Google Now feature will get smarter as you use it more.

The feature represents Google's response to Siri, the popular virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together, using an emerging wireless technology called near-field communications. The current version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, has limited ability to share data through NFC. Samsung Electronic Co.'s new Galaxy S III phone has a feature for sharing photos and video by tapping, but it works only with other S III phones.

The new Android also promises a smarter keyboard, with a feature for predicting your next word before you type.

Google releases Chrome browser for iPhone, iPad

(AP) ? Google's Chrome browser can now be used to surf the Web on the iPhone and iPad.

The Chrome application released Thursday is the latest volley in the escalating rivalry between Google Inc. and Apple Inc., which makes those two popular mobile devices. The announcement highlighted the second day of Google I/O, an annual conference that the company hosts in San Francisco for computer programmers around the world.

Google's attempt to supplant Apple's own Safari browser comes a day after it unveiled plans to sell a low-priced tablet computer to compete against the iPad and Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire.

If Chrome turns out to be a hit on Apple's mobile devices, it could help boost Google's profits, even though it's free, because Google now shares some advertising revenue with Apple in exchange for Apple building the Google search engine into the mobile version of Safari.

Google won't have to pay commissions on revenue generated from searches done through Chrome.

Macquarie Capital analyst Ben Schachter estimates that Google relinquishes up to 60 percent of the advertising revenue flowing from mobile searches on Safari.

The arrival of Chrome on Apple's mobile operating system comes a month after Yahoo Inc. released a browser called Axis for the iPhone and iPad.

Unlike Axis, however, Chrome already is one of the most popular alternatives to Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer on traditional computers. Google said Thursday that Chrome now has 310 million active users, up from 160 million a year ago.

Since Google released the browser in 2008, Chrome also has become the foundation for an operating system powering a line of lightweight laptops that debuted last year. The so-called Chromebooks, which had been sold only online, will be available in 100 Best Buy stores in the U.S. beginning Thursday.

Last month, Google announced its plan to rely on Best Buy to sell the machines, which so far haven't made much of a dent in the personal computer market.

Google+ has 250 million users, more mobile than desktop

Google+ has 250 million users

Google wasn't going to leave its budding social layer (don't call it a network) out of today's IO fun. It gave itself a bit of a pat on the back for (probably) exceeding people's expectations. For all the jokes that have been made (some of them on this very site) at Google+'s expense, it's racked up more than 250 million users. Sure, only 150 million actually active, but simply getting people signed up is a victory in itself. And, hey, about 50 percent of them sign on every day. More interestingly, Vic Gundotra says that more users are signing in with the mobile app than visiting the desktop site. That's great news to go along with the dedicated tablet version that was also announced.

IVP Raises Massive New $1 Billion Fund As ... - Business Insider

IVP

IVP partner Todd Chaffee.

Silicon Valley-based VC firm IVP has just raised a new $1 billion fund.

That is a boatload of money. And it means that a lot more companies will have the pleasure of having IVP as an investor.

IVP is an investor in Business Insider (this publication), so we're obviously biased. But we think it's about time IVP started getting recognized for the positively fantastic performance the firm has delivered over the past few decades.

Unlike other top-tier Valley VC firms, which have grown so large that they now resemble huge private-equity firms--IVP has remained small. It only has 6 partners.

IVP specializes in late-stage investments in technology and media companies. The firm has invested more than $3 billion over the past 32 years.

And it has earned a staggering 42.3% annualized return.

That's more than two-times the industry average.

It's also about 40% more that cash, bonds, and the public stock market are earning right now.

And that explains why pension funds and other limited partners were lined up around the block to participate in IVP's new fund.

It's always a risk taking on a new investor, because you're giving up some control in addition to some of your stock. You have to hope, therefore, that the potential investors who seem smart, forthright, experienced, and supportive when you are getting to know them remain smart, forthright, and supportive after they actually invest.

And IVP has.

Over the years, IVP has invested in companies like Twitter, HomeAway, Zynga, Comscore, Kayak, Buddy Media, Dropbox, Concur, and CafePress. Many of these companies have had huge "exits," and others are preparing to.

If we didn't know the folks at IVP well, we'd probably take this new fund as a sign that the Valley has gone insane again. We'd also surmise that the partners would quickly blow the whole thing by paying up to get into hot pre-IPO companies, the way a lot of firms have tried to do with Facebook, Zynga, Groupon, et al (a follow-the-herd strategy that has gotten some firms hosed).

We do know the folks at IVP, though. So we can confidently predict that they won't do that.

Instead, they'll do what they've done for the past 32 years:

  • Remain very selective, doing only 10-12 deals a year
  • Stay disciplined about the prices they pay
  • Earn their way into very good deals at reasonable prices
  • Help their companies succeed

We're thrilled to see IVP get such a vote of confidence from its investor partners. And we're happy in advance for the future entrepreneurs and companies that will benefit from IVP's expertise.

And, yes, we also look forward to hitting IVP up for some of that $1 billion fund!
