Local food enthusiasts shopping at the Farmers Market BY The White House this Thursday, Sept. 27 will have a special treat: White House Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses will be on hand at noon to demonstrate his recipe for Spiced Pear Upside Down Cake.? The public is invited to watch America's foremost sugar master at work; he'll be using red pears for his recipe, to spotlight a Veterans Affairs heart health expo that will run in conjunction with the market, "VA Goes Red for Women."
Located on the street outside the Veterans Affairs building on Vermont Avenue between H and I Streets NW, the market, run by FRESHFARM, was christened by First Lady Michelle Obama when it first opened in September of 2009.
Yosses, a renowned pastry chef before joining the White House staff in 2007, is also the author of two cookbooks, Desserts for Dummies and The Perfect Finish: Special Desserts for Every Occasion, published in 2010.? The spectacular tome contains a wide range of desserts from his vast personal repertoire.? Yosses' lecture-demos are riveting; check out this video of a September event at Harvard University.
The heart health program on Thursday is designed to raise awareness about heart disease in women, particularly women Veterans and VA employees.? Activities in addition to Yosses' cooking demo will include a ZUMBA fitness class, health screenings and CPR instruction. VA's Undersecretary for Benefits Allison A. Hickey and Principal Deputy Undersecretary for Health, Dr. Robert Jesse, a cardiologist, will speak during the programmed portion from noon to 1:00 PM.? American Heart Association president Donna Arnett, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., and chairperson of the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, will also speak.? The market is open 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
"We are proud to team with the American Heart Association's (AHA) Go Red For Women movement to raise awareness of heart disease in women Veterans and VA staff," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. "This event not only highlights our commitment to care for women Veterans, but it's also a great opportunity to share information about cardiovascular disease and prevention."
