Question about friendships vs. relationships

I have always wondered about this dynamic:

Scenario 1: I have solid friends whom I have known for a decade. When I do crap things, they call me on it. They are my truth tellers. What they say is often hurtful and difficult to accept. But for some reason, it has never ruined our friendship. I either accept their advice or I reject it. But that does not affect our friendship. In some cases, we had fundamental disagreements that we learned to accomodate in each other because we find that being friends gives us much more benefits than being enemies or not working together.

Scenario 2: With my ex-wife and ex-girlfriends, when I did crap things, they would also call me on it. But somehow, these things don't get resolved. Rather they tend to become evil seed that sows the seeds of destructions for the relationship later on. And we are not even able to "agree to disagree" and continue the relationship.

Am I off base with this? Perhaps it's just the specific women I have been with. I would love to hear others perspective on this.
