(RNN) - On a day dedicated to love, thousands across the country cemented their relationships with Valentine's weddings.
And for some couples, the courthouse was too conventional.
Three couples took their relationship to new heights, both literally and figuratively, marrying more than 1,000 feet above the streets of Manhattan at the Empire State Building.
Single parents Laurie Ann Phillips and Daniel Rosenthal of Washington met on a blind date and bonded over their kids. Instead of a ring, the couple bought a house.
Danielle Brabham and Michael Lynch of Miami Shores, FL, became engaged during a power outage from Hurricane Isaac last summer.
Kari Morey and John Kelly of Massachusetts and Virginia met in elementary school, and reconnected 23 years later through Facebook.
The three couples won the wedding experience at New York's No. 1 tourist attraction through a Facebook contest. Each married in separate ceremonies.
For 11 couples at Minnesota's Mall of America, the term "cold feet" was more than just a euphemism.
The couples braved the usual wedding jitters along with 20 degree temperatures to marry at a massive ice castle built at the mall. The one-acre, 30-foot tall tower was created with four million gallons of water and icicle lattices.
Couples wrote to the mall sharing their love stories and why they wanted to be married at the ice castle.
"It is so fun to get married and share our day with these other couples," said Megan Heitkamp, one of 11 brides chosen.
The ice castle was created over the course of several weeks and will stay open through February or until Mother Nature melts it away.
In Sharonville, OH, it was a nice day for a white wedding ? at White Castle.
Brenda Sparks and Rick Hohweiler met at White Castle 29 years ago ? and that's where they married on Thursday.
Catering wasn't an issue - White Castle provided sliders for the bride, groom and guests.
"In the 1980s, we had a group of mutual friends that hung out there every weekend. To be married where we met 29 years ago, and in a place that means so much to our friends, is truly special," Sparks said.
