A jaded RPer's introduction

So, what to start with?

I'm StoneBasilisk, though I've also gone by Garner. While I'm no stranger to the genre of Roleplaying, I've never bothered much with forum-based RPs before. I came to this site because I figured I could use a fresh start on things.

I started out small, on a little-known backwater called the Cortex Roleplaying Engine - found among the thousands of user-created games on Starcraft II - that presented the RP experience in a mostly visual format. Various models, special effects and props carried directly over from the main game could be used to paint the scene of the story, thanks to a long list of specialized chat commands and prompts. The engine was modified and expanded to include so much, that eventually the thing could be used to act out almost anything someone wanted.

Unfortunately, this was a totally open thing, and any idiot with Starcraft and an internet connection could find a few of the Cortex Engine maps near the top pages of the 'most popular' listings. Because of this, the community that had formed in the engine's earliest days suffered greatly from a growing influx of griefers, trolls, illiterates and morons from every corner of the Starcraft's usual fanbase, and the roleplays became dominated by unimaginative themes and bland cliches, if the players actually bothered to try roleplaying at all.

That's when I came in, during the mid-days of Cortex's decline. I was innocent and naive at first, hardly noticing or caring about such things as I took my first, tentative steps into the world of playing roles. But as time passed and I developed preferences and opinions, I became fairly jaded and cynical about the whole thing. I found myself shunning the open crowd and favoring isolated and private RPs with my few friends, and barely able to hold my lunch when yet another necromancer/demon king/generic evil overlord tried to take over the undefined-fantasy-kingdom-of-the-day with a horde of undead monsters.

Eventually, I just got fed up with the endlessly unsatisfying games and left, bidding my remaining equals farewell and setting off for greener pastures elsewhere. And so I come here, to this densely-populated community with the bright, friendly colors and comparatively-fancy text interfaces and seemingly-professional player base. I admit I'm slightly intimidated, not unlike the humble country boy taking his first steps into a massive city. Nevertheless, I hope this will all prove to be very entertaining and worthwhile.
