New Orleans doctor pleads guilty to health care fraud | NOLA.com

A second elderly doctor has pleaded guilty in?court?to conspiring to defraud the federal government in a health care scheme. Dr. Jerry Haskin, 80, acknowledged participating in a scheme that sent bills to Medicare and Medicaid for medical tests that were both not necessary and not provided to patients.

Earlier this week, Dr. Jack Voight of Metairie, who is 81, also admitted to a role in the scam. A federal investigation into various clinics in Metairie and Kenner discovered that Haskin and Voight gave patients prescriptions for narcotic drugs in exchange for their help.

Federal investigators?say the scheme involved a dozen people and bilked the federal government out of $21 million. Both Haskin, who is from New Orleans,?and Voight are scheduled to be sentenced in January. They each face up to 10 years in federal prison. Eight other people have pleaded guilty in the case and?most are?awaiting sentencing, according to a news release by U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office.
