Apple
Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized for problems with maps on the iPhone.
Google Inc. is polishing a new Maps app for Apple Inc.'s iPhone as it prepares to submit it to the iTunes store, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Sources say Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has distributed the app to people outside the company for testing, the report says, though it is uncertain when Google will submit the app.
Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) replaced Google's mapping technology in the latest release of its iOS operating system in September, opting instead to offer its own software.
The move quickly drew complaints from users, who found the new software riddled with inaccuracies, and led to a public apology from Apple CEO Tim Cook.
A new Google Maps app will compete against the Apple mapping software, which the company has been repairing, in what is considered a key feature of smart phones.
